Gut Health

A comfortable, regular digestive system can make a huge difference to how you feel each day.

Bloating, wind, constipation, loose stools, reflux and abdominal discomfort are common, but that does not mean you should simply ignore persistent or changing symptoms.

Digestive health can be influenced by fibre, fluids, movement, stress, medication, food intolerances and underlying health conditions. A cleanse or one fashionable product will not suit everyone.

The best place to begin is with simple daily habits, noticing your own patterns and knowing when symptoms need medical advice.

What Might Be Affecting Your Gut?

Digestive symptoms are rarely explained by one thing alone. These are some of the most common areas worth considering.

Food & Fibre

Too little fibre, sudden diet changes, large portions or particular foods may affect regularity, bloating and digestive comfort.

Fluids & Movement

Not drinking enough and spending long periods inactive can make the digestive system feel slower and less comfortable

Stress, Medication & Health

Stress, hormonal changes, antibiotics and other medicines can affect digestion, while persistent symptoms may have an underlying medical cause.

Simple Changes That May Help

You don’t need to change everything at once. Start with one or two realistic habits and give them time to become part of your routine.

Feed Your Gut Gently

• Eat regular meals and take time to chew rather than rushing.
• Include a variety of fruit, vegetables, oats, pulses and wholegrains as tolerated.
• Increase fibre gradually—sudden increases may worsen bloating.
• Notice your own triggers without cutting out lots of foods unnecessarily.

Support Regular Digestion

• Drink water regularly throughout the day.
• Include gentle daily movement, such as walking.
• Do not regularly ignore the urge to open your bowels.
• Keep a short food-and-symptom diary if patterns are unclear, and seek professional guidance before trying a highly restrictive diet.

Carefully Chosen Gut Support

Gut products are not a substitute for medical investigation or a balanced diet. Different symptoms need different approaches, so we recommend introducing only one new product at a time and checking suitability with medication.

Psyllium is a soluble fibre that can support regularity. It must be taken exactly as directed with plenty of water, and a pharmacist should advise how to separate it from medication.

Some people choose probiotics for digestive support, but effects vary by strain and by person. Try one product at a time, follow the label and stop if symptoms worsen.

Peppermint tea or pharmacy peppermint-oil products may suit some digestive symptoms, but peppermint can worsen reflux. Ask a pharmacist which form may be appropriate for you.

When to Speak to Your GP

Speak to your GP if digestive symptoms are persistent, new, worsening or represent a lasting change from what is normal for you. Seek urgent medical advice for unexplained weight loss, bleeding from the bottom or bloody diarrhoea, a hard lump or swelling in the abdomen, or breathlessness with palpitations and unusually pale skin.
